Lincoln was an less than one year of schooling. Books were scarce and it was so paper. He worked his arithmetic problems on a board and cleans in the board with a knife so he could use it again.

As Abraham grow up, his love for reading and books too increased a great deal, Often causing conflicts with his father who did not like the boy neglecting his work on the farm, to devote time to his reading. Though his stepmother encouraged this passion in him, both she and her husband were completely illiterate. Abraham once revealed in his later days that he had attended school in little’s, meaning a little here and little there, totaling to just a year of attendance in school! His neighbor’s remembered how he used to trudge long distances as a child just to borrow a book from somebody. Apparently the lad did not read all that many books but whatever he did, he absorbed it all very well. His favorite’s books were Parson Weems’, Life and Memorable Actions of George Washington, with its tale of the hatchet and the cherry tree, then Robinson Crusoe, Pilgrim’s Progress and Aesop’s Fables. He must have had access to the Bible from his very young days and read it several times over since that was the only book that the family owned. The family owned in the Bible and he was spent many more hours reading it. He would like to copy parts of order to memorize it. Sometimes he would be like to walk for miles to borrow a book. One of his favorite books was "The Life of George Washington".

At a age of 17, he knew wanted to become a lawyer. He would daily walk on 17 miles to the county courthouse in a order to watch the lawyers in live work. He sat in the back of the courtroom and watched them and they shook their fists and became red in the face. Then he would go home and think about what he had seen. He was mesmerized work on it again.
